How to join the Worldwide Initiative for Safe Schools

As of March 2017, 41 countries have signed up to the Worldwide Initiative for Safe Schools through an initial, informal process.  UNISDR and GADRRRES thank these countries for their continued commitment as WISS Champion Countries.

UNISDR and GADRRRES are pleased to announce that a formal process has been established for countries that are interested in becoming WISS Champion Countries. Any countries that have not yet undertaken the informal membership process and that are interested in becoming a WISS member are invited to follow the steps below to submit a formal letter of interest:

  1. Review the WISS informational document and the WISS Action Plan for complete details regarding WISS objectives and the commitments of Champion Countries.
  2. Craft a brief letter of interest, including a statement from a member of the national education authority Senior Management indicating the desire to sign up to WISS and become a WISS Champion Country.
  3. Include in the letter the designation of a focal point and their contact information.
  4. Send the letter to
    Mr. Robert Glasser
Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction
United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR)
    c/o Palais des Nations
    8-14 Avenue de la Paix
    CH-1211 Geneva, Switzerland
with copies sent to Christel Rose at rosec@un.org and to the chairs of any Comprehensive School Safety or Education in Emergency coordination mechanism in the country.

Upon receipt of the letter of interest, UNISDR will provide an official response as well as information on next steps.
